Irish pubs, with their unmistakable charm, have long been a focal point of social life in Ireland and beyond. They are much more than places to grab a pint; they are a testament to the deep sense of community, rich history, and unique character that defines Irish culture. In recent years, a remarkable revival has been underway, recapturing the essence of the Irish pub and all its distinctive features, including the reintroduction of the legendary "snugs." If you’re reading this you probably understand this already, and if you’re considering the idea of opening a pub of your own, let's first take a journey into the heart of this revival - where tradition meets authenticity.

The Sense of Community

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Irish pub is its ability to foster a strong sense of community. Pubs have long served as the backdrop for countless gatherings, celebrations, and conversations among friends, family, and even strangers. The return to the Irish pub is not just about reviving a place to drink but rekindling the spirit of togetherness that has been central to these establishments for centuries. And while all cultures have their equivalents, nothing quite matches that sense of community that’s built into the fabric of an Irish Pub.

Attention to Detail

A key element of the return to the Irish pub is the meticulous attention to detail. Pubs are no longer simply furnished spaces; they are carefully curated environments that pay homage to their heritage. From the warm, inviting lighting to the authentic finishes that transport you to a different era, every element is thoughtfully designed to create an immersive experience.

It’s that attention to detail that you can find in our own project, Slevin’s of Dunboyne. A long serving establishment, the design we worked on for the Pub had to understand its heritage and treat the design with due respect and reverence without compromising on the fit and finish. The result, as you can see for yourself, is the perfect balance between statement finishes and a subdued, welcoming, colour scheme but with attention paid to even the most minor details.

Authentic Finishes and Character

Authenticity is at the core of this resurgence. The Irish pub is not just about serving drinks; it's about providing a space that captures the soul of Ireland. This means reclaimed wood, vintage signage, exposed brick, and other original features that harken back to a bygone era, without ever veering into the realm of cliché. The character of these pubs is as essential as the drinks they serve - and they are, above all, pubs, not film sets!

Originality and History

Every Irish pub tells a unique story, deeply rooted in history. The design should celebrate all that that history entails, placing a premium on preserving and celebrating it. Whether it's the tale of the local hero whose portrait graces the wall or the stories surrounding the founding of the pub, each one has its own narrative to share. This emphasis on history connects patrons to their roots and gives them a sense of belonging.

The Rebirth of Snugs

One of the most fascinating aspects of the return to the Irish pub is the resurrection of the snug. Appearing in the 19th century, these comfortable, partitioned areas with frosted glass windows, set above head height, and with access to the bar, were originally designed to combat social embarrassment and facilitate female customers. They also served multiple functions beyond this.

Snugs were private, intimate spaces that allowed for discreet business transactions and served as a venue for matchmaking agreements between sets of parents. In heritage pubs, many snugs were lost in the late 20th century due to changing trends and tastes. However, in recent years, there has been a concerted effort to reinstate these quaint corners of the pub.

The revival of snugs adds a layer of genuine history and charm to Irish pubs, taking patrons on a journey back in time while delivering that warm sense of intimacy and connection.

Ultimately the return of the Irish pub is a testament to the enduring spirit of Irish culture. They offer more than just a place to enjoy a drink; they provide a window into the past, a stage for community, and a deep connection to tradition. The resurrection of snugs is a  perfect example of this commitment to authenticity, preserving a piece of history that adds an extra layer of character to these beloved institutions. So, the next time you step into an Irish pub, take a moment to appreciate the rich history, the sense of community, and the attention to detail that makes it a unique and cherished part of Irish life.

And then have a pint.
